Once in a great while, new talent comes along that totally blows everything we know about art. That is what happened when two musical rivals, Luka Sulic and Stjepan Hauser, classically trained cellists, discovered rock and roll. They have since joined forces as 2Cellos.

On Sarah – Dedicated To You, the legendary Carmen McRae pays homage to one of the women who most influenced her career, the inimitable Sarah Vaughan.

McRae teams up with one of the great jazz pianists, Shirley Horn and her trio, on this 1991 recording.

Together they create an intimate portrait that deftly makes the most of Horn’s work at the keyboard while McRae’s subtle vocal phrasing takes center stage.

The album is frequently filled with both reverence and affection, particularly on tunes like Sondheim’s “Send In the Clowns” and on classics like “Black Coffee” and Erroll Garner’s signature composition, “Misty.”

Yet the album also features playful, swinging tunes like “The Best Is Yet to Come” and “I’ve Got the World On a String,” which satisfactorily capture Vaughan’s sassy sounds.

The highlight of the album, however, comes with the final song, “Sarah.” With this tribute, McRae reminisces about Vaughan’s renowned sound and superior craftsmanship, all the while celebrating the life and classy style the late songstress was known for.

All in all, Sarah – Dedicated To You, is a must have for anyone who loves jazz standards, lush ballads and the poignant sounds that made McRae and Horn two of the best jazz musicians of our time.
